True Confessions of an Operations Guru
I need to make a confession: I am not practicing what I preach – or at least what I help to facilitate. I work with a masterful, encouraging, inspiring teacher in the field of storytelling (Michael Margolis), and I am struggling to rewrite my own personal bio.
I have been through Story University courses, and the Reinvention Summit. Heck, I encourage others every week to put themselves out there, give them tips and tricks on how to write a bio and share their own bigger story with the world. I offer practical advice on how to carve out the time to do it, manage the tools and systems that assist. But I am not listening to my own advice. I feel like such a hypocrite.
I really believe that storytelling is how we communicate with one another, and the world. I come from a family of storytellers. I love to tell stories about other people, places, and things. But I am struggling to tell my own story. I don’t want to sound pompous and arrogant, and I don’t want to go the other way towards cutsie. I am struggling with “bio inadequacy syndrome”.
On Friday, we launched the first Module for The New About Me. (Hooray!) As I was drafting an email to all of our eager Story University participants, encouraging them to begin their own journey of crafting their stories, I was convinced that it’s time to lay down my hesitations. It’s time to get over myself and out of my own way.
I have a bigger story to tell. And it’s time I figure out exactly what that story is, and share it with the world. Its time to “Just Do It”. No holding back.
I intend to explore my backstory, there is a big influencer in my early years that has given me the courage and desire to become an independent business woman with a plan. My biggest goal is to push down my training as a hard nosed journalist reporting facts in business language, and tell my story in my voice. I’d like to share how I have struggled balancing family and career, the tough choices I’ve made, and how those experiences have allowed me to find the niche I find myself in now. And finally, I am counting on this journey to help me hone in on my future story – and what possibilities lie ahead.
How about you?
What are your hesitations? What’s holding you back? If you are anything like me, and I’m betting some of you are, the only thing stopping you is yourself.
I am going to venture out on this journey we are calling The New About Me. I really have to now, after putting myself out there this way.
Hold me accountable – please!
And join me on your own journey. We can do this together!
